Alexander Vasilyevich Shevchenko (Kharkov 1882 - Moscow 1948)

Alexander Vasilyevich Shevchenko was a Ukrainian painter and sculptor born in Kharkov in 1882. He studied drawing at the age of 8 and contributed to the creation of theater sets. In 1905 and 1906, Shevchenko visited Paris, where he met the painters Eugène Carrière and Mikhaïl Larionov. He graduated from the Stroganov School of Industrial Aesthetics in Moscow in 1907, then enrolled in the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. From 1911, he exhibited regularly in St. Petersburg and Moscow, then in Berlin. After the Bolshevik Revolution, Shevchenko joined the Plastic Arts Department in Moscow with Kandinsky, Malevich and Tatline. In 1918, he was appointed a member of the Committee for the Preservation of Historical and Artistic Values. He died in Moscow in 1948.
