Portrait of a Russian Man in Fur Clothing, 1881

Vladimir Egorovitch Makovski

25 x 20,5 cm cm oil on canvas mounted on cardboard
The work of Konstantin Makovsky represents the bust-length portrait of a Russian man depicted in three-quarter view facing left. The model occupies most of the pictorial space and stands out against a dark, uniform background devoid of descriptive elements. The composition is set within an oval format that focuses attention on the figure and reinforces the effect of proximity to the viewer.

The man wears a dark fur hat as well as a traditional Russian garment of beige color. The latter is closed at the front by several dark horizontal fastenings, characteristic of certain Russian folk costumes of the 19th century. The wide sleeves and loose cut of the garment contribute to the social and cultural identification of the character.

The face is treated with great realism. The model has a straight nose, slightly rosy cheeks, and a gaze directed to the left of the composition. A long brown beard as well as a thick mustache occupy an important place in the representation and contribute to the characteristic physiognomy of the character. The relatively long hair appears under the hat and falls down the back of the neck.

The chromatic palette is dominated by brown, beige, and black tones. The contrasts remain moderate, and the light mainly illuminates the face and the upper part of the garment, while the background remains plunged into a uniform darkness. The modeling of the face is achieved through subtle variations of light that highlight the volumes of the forehead, nose, cheeks, and beard.
