Still Life with Fruit and Drape, 1920

31,7 x 54 cm Oil on panel
Tadeusz Makowski's work depicts a still life composed of several fruits arranged in a shallow basket placed on a table. The left side, meanwhile, is occupied by a light drape whose soft folds create a more airy area that visually balances the density of the main group.

In the foreground, several fruits are placed directly on the table surface, slightly detached from the main ensemble. The center of the composition concentrates the majority of the elements: apples in red, yellow, and orange hues, green pears, and several plums. The fruits are arranged irregularly in the basket, creating an effect of naturalness rather than a strictly ordered arrangement. The bowl, treated in light tones, constitutes a discreet support that highlights the volumes and colors of the fruits.

The contours are soft, and the volumes are suggested by variations in color rather than by marked linear drawing. This technique gives the whole a certain surface vibration while preserving the legibility of the different elements.

The chromatic palette is dominated by yellows, ochres, reds, greens, and browns. The colors are applied in juxtaposed touches that animate the pictorial matter and enrich the texture effects. The fruits thus present multiple nuances that translate the variations of light and the irregularities of their surface. The white drape introduces a contrast with the more intense colors of the fruits and participates in structuring the composition.

The light, diffuse and uniform, does not come from an external source. The light emanates directly from the color. The space is little constructed according to traditional rules of perspective and relies more on the superimposition of forms, variations in color, and the distribution of masses. The background, treated with broad, free strokes in ochre, beige, and greenish tones, remains deliberately undetailed and helps focus attention on the group of fruits placed in the center of the composition.
