Vlastimil Hofman's work depicts two young girls gathered around a dog placed at the center of the composition. The faces and gazes of both figures are inclined towards the animal, immediately establishing an intimate and affectionate relationship. This proximity of gestures and gazes gives the scene a silent and deeply tender atmosphere.

The young girl on the left of the composition appears calm and pensive. Her face, slightly tilted, has fine, delicately modeled features, particularly visible in the treatment of the eyes, eyelashes, and mouth. She wears a light dress under a brown coat with wide, soft folds. Her hands, with long, slender fingers, gently surround the dog, reinforcing the impression of softness emanating from the scene. The subtle modeling of the face and the delicacy of the hands testify to a particular attention paid to the inner expression of the characters.

Beside her, the blonde young girl adopts a more expressive attitude, slightly turned towards the animal. Her luminous face is framed by short auburn hair adorned with a light blue ribbon. She wears a dark coat covered by a large blue shawl with thick folds, which brings an important chromatic presence to the composition. The contrast between the girl's copper hair and the cool tones of the shawl draws the eye and subtly animates the entire scene.
The dog, placed between the two young girls, constitutes the true emotional center of the work. Its white coat dotted with brown spots and its floppy ears reinforce its soft and familiar appearance. Its gaze directed towards the viewer creates a direct link with them and discreetly breaks the closed intimacy of the group.

The composition is organized according to a stable triangular structure, built by the lines of the shoulders, arms, and head inclinations that converge towards the animal. This pyramidal organization gives the scene great visual stability and accentuates the harmonious character of the whole. The background, deliberately sparse and little detailed, reveals a barely sketched landscape with an isolated tree in the distance. This minimalist decor avoids any distraction and focuses attention on the sensitive relationships between the figures.

The chromatic palette is dominated by soft, harmonious tones mixing grays, browns, blues, and light flesh tones. The fine pictorial matter as well as the diffuse and unified light accentuate the delicacy of the scene. The subtle transitions between colors and the absence of violent contrasts help create a calm, contemplative, and almost melancholic atmosphere. Finally, the sensitive treatment of the faces and the sobriety of the composition bring the work closer to a Symbolist aesthetic, where inner emotion takes precedence over narrative.
