Rugby Players, circa 1930

This work by Alice Halicka depicts a group of male figures engaged in a game scene identifiable as a rugby line-out, treated dynamically and synthetically. The bodies, tightly interwoven with each other, form on the right side of the composition an organized whole around an upward movement, accentuated by the presence of the oval ball suspended in the upper left part.

The composition relies on a play of oblique lines and curves that convey the collective energy of the scene. The male figures are arranged to guide the viewer's gaze towards the center of the action, while raised arms extend the movement towards the upper space of the painting. This upward organization reinforces the tension of the game and gives the scene an impression of engaged and tense play.
Space is constructed through the superimposition of silhouettes and a subtle play of transparency where some bodies seem to merge or double in the movement. The artist seeks less to precisely represent reality than to translate a sensation of movement and rhythm.

The chromatic palette is dominated by nuanced tones of blue, gray, and ochre mixed with pinkish and pastel hues. The diffuse light softens contours and volumes, creating an almost unreal atmosphere. The colors seem to dissolve into each other, giving the whole an airy and moving quality.
This light, associated with a light and vaporous pictorial matter, gives the scene a poetic dimension, distancing the work from a simple sports representation. Alice Halicka here transforms the athletic event into a sensitive and expressive composition, where collective movement becomes almost choreographic.
