Leopold Gottlieb's work represents a group of seven characters gathered around a table, engaged in a meal scene that, through its frontal and collective arrangement, evokes Leonardo da Vinci's traditional mural painting The Last Supper.

The characters are arranged in a semicircle around a table placed at the center of the composition, on which several elements are placed, such as dishes but also a fish and a bottle, constituting the material heart of the scene in the foreground. These dishes particularly attract the eye because they can be interpreted as symbolic motifs recalling certain religious references. Furthermore, the table is placed at an angle, creating a diagonal in the composition that structures the space and leads the gaze towards the center of the group, while the dark background closes the scene and accentuates the impression of closeness between the figures.

The bodies appear simplified and slightly elongated, especially in the treatment of the faces and noses. The marked outlines as well as the synthetic forms reflect a desire for stylization rather than a search for naturalistic realism. Each character adopts a different posture. Some seem to be talking, others appear absorbed in their thoughts, thus creating a visual rhythm that animates the entire composition. Despite this diversity of gestures and attitudes, a certain unity emerges from the group thanks to the repetition of curved lines and colors.

The chromatic palette is particularly rich and contrasting. Warm tones of red, orange, and yellow dominate the flesh tones and certain parts of the clothing, while blues, greens, and violets bring depth and structure the different figures. These chromatic oppositions reinforce the expressive intensity of the scene and contribute to the construction of volumes more than traditional modeling.

The light appears diffuse and seems to concentrate on the characters and their clothing, leaving certain areas in relative obscurity. It does not seek to reproduce realistic lighting but rather contributes to creating an interior, almost spiritual atmosphere. The pictorial material, visible in the thick brushstrokes and accentuated contours, gives the whole an expressive dimension close to the post-expressionist research of the early 20th century.
