Antoni Piotrowski's work depicts two male figures on horseback progressing along a forest path, patrolling in the heart of an autumnal landscape. The riders are dressed in traditional military uniforms consisting of a light jacket, dark trousers with red details, and black boots. They occupy the center of the composition and are part of an almost silent scene where the surrounding forest plays an essential role. The apparent calm of the scene contrasts with the military function of the characters and helps create a contemplative atmosphere rather than a heroic or spectacular vision, typical of history paintings.

The dirt path forms a diagonal that crosses the scene from the foreground to the background, guiding the viewer's gaze through the space of the composition. The center is occupied by the two riders and their horses, which seem to advance slowly, reinforcing an impression of restraint and stability. Their relatively rigid posture and the calm pace of the horses contribute to this feeling of silent progression within the landscape.

To the left of the scene, the slender trunks of birch trees introduce a strong verticality that balances the horizontality of the path and the forest horizon. The precise treatment of the trees, notably the light contrasts of their bark, immediately attracts the eye and constitutes an important visual anchor in the composition. The background is treated more diffusely and gradually dissolves into a misty atmosphere, accentuating the depth of the scene and the feeling of humidity typical of forest landscapes.

The chromatic palette favors dark, nuanced tones, dominated by browns, grays, and muted greens, fully conveying the autumnal atmosphere of the landscape. Some brighter touches appear nonetheless in the light uniforms of the riders and in the birch trunks, creating subtle contrasts within the composition. These lighter areas allow the figures to stand out from the setting while maintaining the overall harmony of the scene.

The light is natural, slightly veiled by an overcast sky with gray tones. It diffuses evenly across the entire landscape and helps create a calm, vaporous atmosphere.
The overall composition thus demonstrates a naturalism attentive to atmospheric effects and the representation of the landscape. The artist gives as much importance to the human presence as to the forest environment, making nature a true narrative element of the work.
